What to do first with your new home: A planner's checklist
Published Monday, 12th July 2021Moving into a new home is an exciting time, but it can also be overwhelming. There are so many things to do and figure out! When you're ready to start tackling these tasks (or even if you're just curious what they all entail), take a look at this blog post for some suggestions on how to get started with your new home.
If you're one of the many that have just purchased your first, second, or third home, then this guide is for you. It will help take some weight off your shoulders and save money by considering all aspects from start to finish, so don't let it pass!
It's not easy being a new homeowner, but luckily we've compiled everything you need to know about moving into a new place. This includes important considerations like cost and priorities before hand-over day and aftercare advice on how to maintain optimum living standards long term without spending more than necessary - which may be different if it's an investment property rather than a purely residential house with expenses split down the middle.
Get the locks changes
So many homeowners forget to change their locks when they move into their new homes. Do you really know who else has copies of those keys and now have access to your new home?
In our opinion, one of the first things to do is explore your options for locks, and they changed as soon as possible. To keep you safe and secure in your own home, it's best to get brand-new locks fitted so that only people who are supposed to be there can enter.
A locksmith or handyman can do this if you don't feel confident in doing it yourself.
Fire and smoke alarms
Fire and smoke alarms can be the difference between life or death. To keep your home safe, you should get them checked regularly by a professional service technician to ensure they are in good shape, especially if an existing alarm system needs inspection! If not, it would also be wise of you to purchase detectors for every room.
A full boiler service
After purchasing your new property, all aspects of the heating system must be thoroughly examined, including when the boiler was last serviced and its installation date. This information should have been given out at some point during negotiations. Still, sometimes this may not happen, so don't forget to get in contact with a qualified professional who's able to inspect such things and bring this information to your attention.
A deep clean
The best way to start your life in a new home is to cleanest possible floors, walls, and furniture. You may want to consider hiring cleaners before you move out of your current residence so that they can thoroughly get rid of any bacteria or other unwanted entities from surfaces where you are unfamiliar with their state beforehand.
Hiring professionals will also save time during this transition period. We recommend allocating at least two weeks for unpacking and organizing and getting acquainted with what feels like forever ago when everything was neat under one roof!
Clear the gutters
Pay attention to your gutters, and you won't regret it! You may want to consider calling in some professionals to take care of them once and for all! Gutters have a lot more than just water flowing through their pipes: leaves, dirt, and sticks can clog up your gutterings like nothing else if not attended to from time to time. This is something that no one wants on their hands as they could lead to damage elsewhere with enough unchecked flow over time.
Decorate essential rooms
Many factors go into decorating your new home. You will most likely have to pick something first and then work with it from there unless you can afford to hire a professional designer or interior decorator - not all of us are so lucky!
Decorating our homes is always an exciting venture, but we often put off until the last minute. There's never going to be just the right space waiting for us when moving in, no matter how much research we do beforehand, because everyone has their taste preferences.
In an ideal world, you would be able to decorate every room in your house. But that's not realistic for most people. So what should you do when it comes time to start picking out paint colors and furniture? You'll want to prioritize the rooms where a lot of activity takes place - think bedroom, living room, kitchen... bathrooms are also important because they're often used at high traffic times like morning or evening showering/getting ready activities!
We suggest picking the essential rooms that you will be using the most and focusing on getting them decorated first. Consider the following rooms to be of utmost importance: your bedroom and living room are likely to be the simplest; once these are tackled, then you can look at more complex and expensive rooms such and kitchen and bathrooms.
